Rikugien: The Most Beautiful Japanese Landscape Garden

If you are looking for the best autumn spots in Tokyo, Rikugien Garden is one of them. It is located in Bunkyo. Its history can be traced back to the 1700s. It was built for the 5th Tokugawa Shogun. Alongside the Koishikawa Korakuen, Rikugien is often considered also as the most beautiful traditional Japanese landscape garden in Tokyo. This Japanese garden features a large central pond surrounded by forested areas and man-made hills – all of which are connected by a network of hiking trails. It is surrounded by some hills to provide additional beauty for the gardens.

During the autumn in the months of November and December, special tours are offered to witness the beautiful autumn colors in Rikugien Garden. The best time to visit here is from late November to early December to see numerous maples turn into golden and color autumn views.

Rikugien garden is also a special place to visit during spring where various flowers and cherry blossom trees are in full bloom. The garden’s large central pond is the best place to check out cherry trees and flowers in the spring months from April to May.

Rikugien’s opening hours during the day is from 9 AM to 5 PM. Evening light is available until 9 PM during autumn and spring. You can get an admission ticket at the opening entry gate for 300 yen. Please prepare 300 yen in advance before entering during busy months.

How to get to Rikugien garden in Bunkyo City

Komagome Station is the nearest station to the garden. The main entrance gate is located in the eastern part of the park. The entry gate is only a 5 to 10-minute walk south of Komagome station on the Namboku Subway Line or JR Yamanote Line.
